Paddling Accessories for Kayaks & Canoes
4 inch hatch
and hardware
To correctly install the outriggers on your kayak it is important that you have underneath access to install and tighten the locknuts and washers that are part of your kit. If you do not have a hatch, you will need to install a hatch for underneath access. We offer a 4" and 6" black full turn hatch.

Long enough to stand up and still paddle
I wanted to send your team my compliments on the quality of your outriggers. I put them on my kayak last weekend, and went sight-fishing for redfish in Florida's Indian River Lagoon. The outriggers allowed me to stand up and see the fish so much better than I could before. Plus, as a flyfisherman, I was able to cast to the fish much better. I had one of my best fishing weekends ever.
When other fishermen see my boat, the first thing they want to know is where I got the outriggers. I hope you continue to make innovative kayak products.
To me, the biggest thing with the outriggers is being able to see the fish. We have beautiful, clear water in the lagoon system, but I can't see the fish when I'm sitting a few inches above it. When I'm standing and using a push pole, I can see everything withing 30 feet. I was able to cast to more that twice as many fish, so naturally my hookups increased dramatically.

One of our customers sent pictures of the way they installed their Outriggers. The bar and clamps are not part of our kit, they are easily picked up at any hardware store, Home Depot or Lowes....
Used a 2 inch flat bar that goes across the top. Used a screw eye to clamp it in place.
If you need an extra set of Deck Mounts to move your Outriggers from Kayak to Kayak or canoe to canoe.

Bill,
Thought I'd give you an update. The outriggers got here in fine shape, thanks! I ended up mounting both on the port side in my yak so Amy and I could both get in easily. Had to finesse positions a bit to maximize stroke range, but it seems to work out well. The difference in stability is absolutely amazing! Amy (my dog) did a big body-shift on our first test .. which would have formerly caused at least a bit of a lurch; rock stable! I was able to line the outriggers up pretty well fore-and-aft, so they actually improve the yak's tracking, AND without any noticably increased windage. The nice thing is that I feel an added sense of stability ... and so does Amy ... so no one gets nervous when we see a big gator coming around.
My wife hasn't let me mount her outriggers on her yak yet .... only because she hasn't decided how she really wants 'em. She liked my set up, but was thinking of the more traditional one-on-each-side approach just for the added security with our 4 yr old daughter. Most of the options tend to limit full stroke for someone .... yeah, at 4 my daughter is anxious to get in on the paddling too! I expect she'll probably settle on the stern position, but time will tell. I'm rigging up a way to set the outriggers temporarily so she can at least get an idea before I start drilling. Then again, she tried my setup and it didn't limit her stroke at all ... AND it allows the front paddler to at least paddle clearly on one side, with just a bit of a limit on the outrigger side, so she may try that.

Why Outriggers?
1) You want to stand up and sight cast or just see the fish better. Especially good for fly fishing.
2) You feel unstable in your kayak or canoe.
3) You dive and want easier access back into your kayak after your dive trip.
4) You know of someone that is handicapped and would love to paddle but is not comfortable with the stability in a kayak.
5) Adds 150 pounds of floatation to your kayak or canoe.
ALL OUTRIGGERS WILL HAVE YELLOW FLOATS
All Outriggers are not made the same. Click here to see why ours are more stable.... >>>>>>>
If you are going to stand up and paddle we recommend our 48 inch Baja Paddle Leash.
One of our customers fabricated a sail to put between the upright shafts. What a great idea... >>>>>>>>>

CANOE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
KAYAK INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
We do not supply the cross bracket to mount your Outriggers to a Canoe. These are some examples of what customers have done to install them. Its rather easy and should not take a lot of time.
Hello Yak-Gear Staff,
I am writing to say thanks for providing a well designed, functional product backed up by great support and customer service. Several months ago I began a search for canoe outriggers to install on my 17' Grumman canoe which is used extensively to fish the inland bays and backwaters around Naples/Bonita Springs Florida for Redfish, Cravelle jacks, Snook, Sea Trout, Tarpon, etc. Additionally, the waters my son-in-law and I fish are home to "gators", shark, stingrays and a host of other toothy critters we do not wish to swim with!
As everyone knows canoes are great for stealth fishing but come up short when wind and boat driven waves create rough water conditions nor do they lend themselves to sight fishing while standing up (don't ask how I know). Did I mention the 1200 pound Manatee's that like to go under the canoe and scratch their backs on the hull?
During my internet outrigger search I found several excellent products but only the Yak-Gear outriggers addressed every requirement I had with a high quality, reasonably priced, uniquely designed outrigger. All the products I looked at provided adequate stability, reasonably light weight and quality construction. But only the Yak-Gear stabilizers incorporated the ability to swing to a near vertical position allowing us to bring our canoe next to a dock for loading and unloading gear without removing the stabilizer unit and they are impervious to salt water!
The install utilized a 1" x 2" steel tube that I cut to fit the gunwale dimension, filled with closed cell foam, and painted. All hardware is stainless steel. The tube not only provides a strong stabile mount for the outriggers but a rod holder and fish finder(installed since photo was taken) as well. The entire unit is easily accessible from the stern seat area.
At the time I placed my order Yak-Gear did not have all the necessary parts to construct my stabilizers but sourced them quickly and expedited the shipment to Bonita Springs to coincide with my trip form Buffalo, NY to Florida...what more could you ask for? If you are considering a set of stabilzers for your canoe or kayak you can't go wrong with Yak-Gear!
Sincerely,
Gary
